MEET YOUR WEST COAST HOSTS AT BREAKERS
Welcome to our Sense of Place
Originally from the deep south of New Zealand, Jan brings warmth, calm and genuine West Coast hospitality to every stay at Breakers.
Her love for the outdoors and connection to the rhythm of the Coast helps shape an experience that feels thoughtful, relaxed and deeply personal.
Born and raised on the West Coast, Stephen’s connection to this place runs deep.
A photographer and adventurer at heart, many of the images woven throughout Breakers are his own — capturing the landscapes, light and moments that continue to inspire him every day.
For more than two decades, Jan and Stephen have welcomed travellers from around the world to their beachfront home on the West Coast.

MEET THE BREAKERS KIDS
We have two dogs at Breakers, more fondly known as the fur kids, they head our entertainment and security team! They're part of what makes our place feel like home.
You'll often spot them out on the grounds or racing down to the beach (which they're convinced is theirs!)
Ansel & Emma
Ansel
German Shorthaired Pointer
9 YEARS OLD
At 9 years old, Ansel still has serious puppy tendencies. He thinks everyone will love him ( and honestly, he's usually right). He can be a little overexcited when meeting new people, but his enthusiasm is just a part of his charm.
Head Of Entertainment | Beach Patrol
Emma
English Pointer (Rescue)
7 YEARS OLD
Emma is our first female fur baby and a rescue who very much landed on her feet. Now seven, she's settled in beautifully. She can be a little wary at first, but also a bit boisterous, apologies if she likes you a bit too much! She's a right snuggler.

A Note from The Kids
We love our home, our beach and all the people who come to stay at Breakers.
We have our own area and generally don't visit guests unless invited, but if we do pop over to say hello, we'd love a gentle pat. Thank you for respecting our space and helping us feel right at home too.

Breakers sits within a place of deep cultural and historical significance, where the stories of Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast) remain woven through the coastline, bush and sea that surround us.
Within the boundary of the property lies a recognised Wāhi Tapu, acknowledged with deep care and respect. Through shared kōrero, stories of pounamu journeys, whakapapa and the enduring connection between people and whenua continue to shape the spirit of this place today.
As hosts, we see ourselves as kaitiaki during our time here — caring for this land with humility while welcoming others to experience its beauty respectfully.
Our Connection to this Place

HONOURING THE (LAND) WHENUA

West Coast Penguin Trust
Breakers is a proud supporter of the West Coast Penguin Trust, as Nine Mile Beach is home to a nesting colony of little blue penguins. We are involved in the local stoat trapping programme to help protect these vulnerable birds and support the abundance of native wildlife that calls this area home. Through our room night donations, we help contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts of the Trust.
SPCA Give Back Programme
As animal lovers, Breakers is proud to support our local Greymouth SPCA and the important work they do caring for animals in need.
Through rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming, the SPCA helps give vulnerable animals a second chance.
Contributions from every room night booked at Breakers help support their ongoing care, shelter and welfare services.
Paparoa Wildlife Trust
Breakers is also proud to support the Paparoa Wildlife Trust and the important work they do to protect and restore native wildlife throughout the West Coast. Through predator control, habitat restoration and species monitoring, the Trust helps ensure our unique natural environment continues to thrive. A contribution from every room night booked at Breakers helps support their ongoing conservation projects.
Westland Heritage Park
Breakers is also proud to support Westland Heritage Park and the important role it plays in preserving and sharing the rich history of the West Coast. Through heritage buildings, exhibitions and community events, the Park helps keep our unique stories alive for future generations. Stephen contributes photography and promotional support to assist with their ongoing projects and initiatives.
Greenstone Park Speedway
Breakers is also proud to support Greenstone Park Speedway and the important role it plays in bringing the West Coast community together through motorsport. Through race meetings, club events and volunteer efforts, the Speedway provides entertainment and opportunities for competitors of all ages. Stephen contributes photography and promotional support to assist with their ongoing events and activities.
Looking Ahead
At Breakers, we believe in giving back. Through community partnerships, conservation projects and local initiatives, we are proud to play a small part in helping the West Coast continue to thrive.
