Kaitiakitanga | Guardianship

At Breakers, we feel deeply connected to the whenua (land), sea and native bush that surround us here on Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast)

This is more than simply where we live.

It is a place we care for, protect and feel privileged to share with others.

Guided by the values of kaitiakitanga and inspired by the Tiaki Promise, we are committed to treading lightly, supporting local conservation and respecting the natural and cultural significance of this special part of Aotearoa.

From the wāhi tapu at the entrance to the property to the wildlife, coastline and gardens that shape daily life here, many of the choices we make at Breakers are grounded in care for people, place and future generations.

We invite our guests to slow down, connect with the Coast respectfully and leave only good footprints behind.

Community & Conservation

Supporting our home

At Breakers, community is deeply woven into the way we live and host.

From supporting local conservation groups and wildlife trusts to working alongside West Coast organisations and businesses, we believe caring for this place also means caring for the people and communities within it.

We are proud to support initiatives including the West Coast Penguin Trust, Paparoa Wildlife Trust, SPCA, Westland Heritage Park, Greenstone Speedway and Riders Against Cancer WC Branch, helping protect the unique wildlife, landscapes and community spirit that make Te Tai o Poutini so special.

Through local partnerships, conservation support and sharing the stories of the Coast with our guests, we hope to contribute positively to the region we are privileged to call home.

Looking Ahead

At Breakers, we believe in giving back. Through community partnerships, conservation projects and local initiatives, we are proud to play a small part in helping the West Coast continue to thrive.
